After a recent upgrade, I can't print to either of my two USB-connected HP printers. The printers show up in CUPS, jobs show up, but nothing prints out. The printers show "Paused - 'Rendering Completed'" and the jobs just sit in the queue. Restarting the printers has no effect. Reinstalling a printer had no effect. Printing via command line or GUI has no effect. I also tried rebooting and disconnecting/reconnecting USB. One of the printers is a multifunction and scanning works fine in xsane. hp-doctor gives a clean report.
      Code:

Still no printing after another dist-upgrade. hp-testpage gets stuck in queue of default printer. Printers stop as soon as a job is sent to them and restarting them has no effect.

The "solution" was to reinstall the printers without the hp:/ backend, using the CUPS web interface. Printers installed with the hp: (HPLIP) backend don't print for some reason. I also tried purging all cups and hp packages and reinstalling, but this had no effect on this issue.
      Code:
lpstat -v
device for HP_Photosmart_8100_series: usb://HP/Photosmart%208100%20series?serial=MY4A62M2GH0485
device for HP_Photosmart_C5100_series: usb://HP/Photosmart%20C5100%20series?serial=MY6BAG12YZ04MK&interface=1

CUPS changes often and rarely in favourable ways, hplip is certainly a further complication - but there hasn't really been any large upstream bump in the latest upload(s) (mostly refactoring and hardening from the Debian side of the package).

This happened only in the last week or so and out of the blue. hp-doctor and hp-check don't report any problems, but print jobs just sit in the queue with the hp: backend and the job shows "Filter failed" in the CUPS web interface.

I finally noticed I was getting permission errors in syslog:
      Code:
Mar 16 23:10:17 MSAK1 hpijs[23073]: io/hpmud/musb.c 595: invalid usb_open: Permission denied
Mar 16 23:10:17 MSAK1 hpijs[23073]: io/hpmud/musb.c 1151: unable to open hp:/usb/Photosmart_8100_series?serial=MY4A62M2GH0485

Doing a "chmod 666" on the printer device magically allows printing from printers installed with the hp: backend again:
      Code:
lsusb -s 003:004
Bus 003 Device 004: ID 03f0:ba02 Hewlett-Packard PhotoSmart 8100 series

ll /dev/bus/usb/003/004
crw-rw-r--+ 1 root saned 189, 259 Mar 16 23:14 /dev/bus/usb/003/004

chmod 666 /dev/bus/usb/003/004

ll /dev/bus/usb/003/004
crw-rw-rw-+ 1 root saned 189, 259 Mar 16 23:19 /dev/bus/usb/003/004

Prior to doing the chmod 666, even printing as root didn't work. Also, adding users to the saned group has had no effect, printing still doesn't work, even after logging out and back in again. Anyone know why? Originally, no one was in the the saned group:
      Code:
grep saned /etc/group
scanner:x:102:saned,alex,maureen,test
saned:*:116:

      Code:
lpstat -v
device for HP_Photosmart_8100_series: usb://HP/Photosmart%208100%20series?serial=MY4A62M2GH0485
device for HP_Photosmart_C5100_series: usb://HP/Photosmart%20C5100%20series?serial=MY6BAG12YZ04MK&interface=1
device for PDF: cups-pdf:/
device for Test_Photosmart_8100: hp:/usb/Photosmart_8100_series?serial=MY4A62M2GH0485

Keep in mind that these access rights won't survive a reboot (as the device nodes are on devtmpfs), so there might have been changes in regards to the shipped udev rules.

Thanks. I've also noticed that changing the group of the printer device to "lp" also allows printing from any user:
      Code:
# chown root:lp /dev/bus/usb/003/004

ll /dev/bus/usb/003/004
crw-rw-r--+ 1 root lp 189, 259 Mar 17 09:26 /dev/bus/usb/003/004

Solved, printer device groups are now coming up as lp after an upgrade and reboot and printing works with either backend.

I'm not sure what fixed this. I also purged and reinstalled sane-utils and sane.
