After the dist-upgrade yesterday my bash/dash history has disappeared or more correctly is not available with the arrow keys. ~.bash_history is still there but was not being read as user. After the last upgrade today the user history now works but still no history as root with the many regularly used commands, any idea what has happened or even better is it fixable.

While I haven't identified a pattern yet, it occassionally happens that bash forgets its command line history (and yes, I've also noticed it happening more often recently). The past history is likely gone, but will build up again - which is not exactly a satifactory answer...

(bash and dash don't share a common history, actually dash hasn't any to begin with).
