The naming continues to be of figures in Greek mythology. If we look at the recent history we see quiet a few other deathly (or more general negative) fellas - not only because Debian sid is usually an unfriendly place - but also these fellas are sisters: Geras (old Age), Keres (death spirit), Moros (doom), Thanatos and Hypnos (death and sleep) -- I only named the ones we have released so far (if I haven't forgotten someone), there are a few more. Their mother isn't a beloved person either - it is Nyx (night - which is scary by itself). So nothing out of the ordinary - and nothing to be afraid of. The team is usually quiet good in letting the bad guys be good.
(And frankly they are not that much of a villain. Life becomes pretty boring without an end to it - and I am not only saying that because they started Christmas a bit early this time in Germany and aired "Groundhog Day" yesterday [the story isn't Christmas related at all, but they tend to air it frequently around Christmas usually as a "family movie" … the other interesting Christmas movie repeat is "Pearl Harbor" btw usually on Christmas Eve - no, I am not kidding. At least the Die Hard series usually follows suit … but I am off-topic now])
Random trivia: Nyx was the release I used to install aptosid the first time. Still remember the wallpaper: A beautiful girl blowing the wind over a silent hill in the dark. Remember the Keres: The red-lipstick driver? Better not be kissed by a death spirit my friend. |

It is my understanding that Thanantos is responsible for collecting the souls of those whose sin and good deeds are too closely balanced to find their way to heaven or hell. If Thanantos can't sort out a soul, it is taken to purgatory until its disposition can be decided.
So I would say that Thanantos is neither good nor evil, but just performs a necessary task. But of course its all myths and legends... |
