Maybe they start to fear Apple with their lock in philosophy? Maybe they see Linux as partner sharing the same, not locked in hardware? Just a guess, not really a founded idea.

Smoke and mirrors or genuine interest, its hard to tell. MS-Closed is still trying to lock everyone else out at the bios level, and the following quote doesn't eliminate that option.

They still expect linux to run as a vm on their OS... its a one way open-ness. I doubt they will be releasing win7-vm.deb any time soon.
