Hi friends,

my new installation of aptosid stops at the line:

... Waiting for /udev to be fully populated

and after laptop dies.

Do you know what I can do to avoid the problem?
Many thanks

beppe

Try removing "quiet" from the boot command line, it might give you a better clue.

Providing some information about your computer could also help provide ideas.

If you have any "extra" usb devices or similar connected you might also try disconnecting those, perhaps one of them is causing the issue and if so maybe figuring that out will also help someone come up with a better solution for you.

the computer is an assembled desktop; unfortunately last aptosid version hasn't "quiet" at boot;
I don't know if what I am writing will be appreciated, but a 3 years old sidux works well.

It does. If you are booting from a livecd (or usb) then you might have to pick "no quiet" from the F5 menu (says "Kernel Default" initially). If you have installed it then you need to edit the grub menu entry where you should see "quiet".

It suggests that it is not a dying hardware problem and not that your hardware is "too new".

neither with "no quiet" option live dvd starts.
the mater, I suppose, is to understand what is different between live dvd sidux (that works) and aptosid; I really don't understand.
another way: installing sidux and after shift to aptosid; times ago I saw a "right way to do from sidux to aptosi" or similar, but where?

I did not expect it to start but I thought that it might provide some more useful information which would help people try and figure out (or guess) what the problem might be with your computer. If you try it again please either write down the last messages it shows or just take a photo of what it says on the screen when it stops to show us. Also make sure you leave the computer alone for 5 minutes or more at the "Waiting for udev" message, it may be stuck waiting for things to time out.

I doubt there is very much that hasn't changed. The kernel has moved forward maybe 10 or more versions and all of the other packages (e.g. udev) have also seen plenty of development and generally numerous new versions.

You cannot go from a sidux install to aptosid any more. For a while it was possible, but as sid rolls along it becomes impossible to keep trying to handle upgrading from all of the possible old versions people might have. There was some specific code in some packages to handle the transfer from sidux to aptosid at the time but this is now gone as it could only be maintained sanely for so long. Even if the rename hadn't happened, trying to upgrade from a version of aptosid that old to the current state still would have been a nightmare (and basically only something the foolhardy "experts" would try, as it crosses over the time of a Debian stable release it could even require going from the old system to Debian stable and then moving forward again to sid or in other words a bloody mess).

One thing I never mentioned before, are you sure your cd/dvd/usb is prepared correctly? Did you burn in DAO mode? Can you boot it on another computer successfully?

well, udev remains much more than five minutes; and i'll take a shot.
but, a doubt: I tried to start with a new ubuntu (no boot) and with an old ubuntu (boots), the same result of sidux and aptosid; could be a matter of kernel 3.x.xx? where I can download some old aptosid release (2010-3 could meet the parameter)?
