hi

i wonder how to customize the following :

-aspect of boot menu (colors, disposition, back image ?)

-enabling to hide the text display of boot sequence (toggling with Esc for instance) AND displaying a picture instead

-using a different user interface for printer management ? ( web interface for CUPS IS NOT user friendly, requires passwords, etc)

thanks for suggestions...

Which printer management does not need a root password if you want to add a printer?

what you add/change there will increase duration of the boot sequence. No thanks!

I think apogarte asked in the wrong section of the forum, and meant once aptosid has been installed. (Again, that's how I see it) I would also sacrifice performance over that eye candy of hiding booting messages. Yes, I still miss bootsplash, and I admint I didn't use the silent mode, but the verbose mode, so I could still see the booting messages, but had a background in the TTY's. Too bad such thing doesn't exist/isn't mantained anymore.

hi

if i am in a wrong thread plz somebody explain (this is "community forum/request and suggestions"...)

yes i am talking of installed system, not live

i am very uncertain why hiding text displayed AND displaying a picture would make starting really slower Shocked, but this is anyways a matter of aesthetics. I really think this display of text is not usefull 99% of time i boot, and anyways this would be my choice, not the choice of everybody... AND there will always be the possibility to toggle splash <-> text with esc for instance...

so, again : is it possible, and how ?! Rolling Eyes

if you were talking about installed system and requesting/suggesting ( that's the forum you have choosen) aptosid should/could deliver/do that then you must understand that aptosid is a live iso and the installation just copies the live iso to the HD ( reverting the specific changes/settings that are absolutely necessary for the live iso.

The only difference between live system and installed one are the "live" packages / changes that are deinstalled/reverted when installing the system.

This said, I cannot see how a fancy bootsplash would fit there.

On the installed system you are free to install/deinstall everything you need, so go ahead.

ok x-un-i

i do not understand your argumentation. I think this is the point often here, about the fact live system is the center preocupation (and point of view) of devs, while i (and others ?) consider aptosid mainly as a very efficient reliable quick and nice debian sid installing media

Do you mean this forum is NOT taking in account the installed system ? is it only about live sessions ? in this case could you tell me where i will be authorized to ask questions and/or make suggestions for installed system ? somewhere within aptosid forums or should i go somewhere else like debian forums or else ?

i will be specially interresed in having an answer to my questions...

(as a matter of saying : i do not request a fancy boot splash, just something a little more aesthetic than text displayed)

thanks for helping to make things clearer,

apoG

Booting takes a few stages.
- BIOS (that's your computer)
- GRUB2 (that's customizable, http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/ see documentation)
- Pre-desktop booting (not really customizable but you can hide the messages afaik)
- Desktop loading
