It would be valuable for the installer to have an option to skip grub install - perhaps the drop-down list of places to install grub could include a "skip grub install" entry.
In general I appreciated the clean simplicity of the installer, but Aptosid's behavior in this area is a little too like Microsoft Windows for my comfort, where it is assumed Windows variants are the only possible OSes on the system, and one has to go to lengths to repair the MBR after installing. In Aptosid's case it is assumed that we want Aptosid to control the boot of the computer, which is not a good assumption.
In my case, I use a boot partition with my preferred grub v1 on it, and I didn't want Aptosid to overwrite my MBR. Only thing I could do was have it install grub to the MBR of one of my non-boot drives, which was good enough to avoid breaking my system, but may not be an option for all users. And even in my case it was undesirable as I had something else in that MBR and didn't prefer to overwrite it.
Thanks for considering this change. |

You can always install grub2 into the partition you're installing aptosid to, that way it won't touch your MBR. But we won't add an option to omit installing the bootloader completely. |
