Today I downloaded Κῆρες/Xfce, burnt it to CD, installed it to it's own ext4 partition, then logged out/init 3/dist-upgrade (7 packages were upgraded)/init 5/logged in and I wanted to report 2 bugs that I have found out-of-the-box (I have not installed the Nvidia drivers).
1) 2 months ago I reported on the old dist-upgrade forum that gxine was crashing on startup. Another user confirmed the behavior but no one from the sidux team responded. On the new install I started gxine, ran the short setup wizard, and gxine crashed. If I restart gxine the same wizard comes up and then gxine crashes again. Why include a broken mediaplayer in a new release?
2) I noticed this on sidux a few days ago but wasn't sure if it was a bug or not... the eyedropper icon does not appear when choosing the eyedropper tool (in Desktop Settings>Colors, for example) The color chooser still works but it's unclear what part of the pointer is picking the color, though it seems like it's the tail of the arrow.
On the plus side, the installer took a minute less time on my system (down to 6 minutes from 7 minutes). Very nice!
Thanks for the great work, team.
Sincerely, hhh |

I assume (not using gxine myself) that you're plagued by incompatible ffmpeg ABIs, caused by using 3rd party repositories with questionable quality and packaging (and legal) policies. It might help to revert to plain Debian ffmpeg and related packages (which is not that easy to accomplish). An easy test would likely be to boot a fresh aptosid ISO and install gxine from Debian to the live system for testing. |

slh, no, you're assumption is incorrect. As I stated, this is a brand new aptosid/Xfce install with nothing done to it except for an initial dist-uprade. gxine is installed by default, but it crashes. |

it has been reported to me that it also fails from live, like you just experienced.
you can open a bugreport against it. installing reportbug-ng really eases that up. open it, enter your mail client in config and good to go. please of course enter the above output to it.
i checked and there is no bugreport so far.

I've filed a bug and am awaiting email confirmation. I'll edit this post with a bug number when I get it.
Thanks for the help, devil. |
