I received the below notification in the system mailing:

I've seen different configurations around, but they're either for ext2, or linux flag, and some dd commands, but I don't want to mess up the drive. What should I do now? probably change that flag from mftdata to linux? Thanks

Raw_Read_Error_Rate is basically the more important reading, that said, I personally have made very mixed experiences with S.M.A.R.T. in basically all directions... I do have drives that are basically dead (spinning up, but reproducably causing read/ write errors) which get a clean bill of health from S.M.A.R.T. (even in extended testing), just as well as drives where S.M.A.R.T. started complaining about impeding death (literally) 10 years ago and which are still going strong (even after extended read/ write tests).

According to my experiences, you really have to look at the situation from a different angle. If you use your drives for important data and/ or in a commercial environment, any kind of bad signs from a drive (S.M.A.R.T., read errors, dropping out of a RAID array, etc.) should be taken seriously and cause immediate replacement. In a personal setting I simply don't care about S.M.A.R.T. at all, wait for eventual read/ write errors and then give the drive an extended treatment of (manual) read/ write tests before really disposing them, in many cases they'll go back into service again and usually survive quite a while longer. Keep in mind that no amount of S.M.A.R.T., checksumming, snapshotting or RAID levels avoids the need for creating (and testing!) offline(!) backups in regular intervals, at least for the data you care about.

What is the actual problem now?

Hi slh. So far the harddrive is working fine. I can read, and I have moved some files to other harddrive (so I assume I can write). All started when a file became corrupted while it was being written/appended, but so far it was just that file.

I've ordered a new 4 Tb drive to move what is left in the drive just in case and I'm planning to reuse the old one to a less active use.

Do you have any recommendation of what to do with the old drive once I've migrated the data? just recreate the partition table to Linux, and reformat? The harddrive only has a primary partition and it's nothing fancy as a lvm, nor part of a RAID.

Move the data as soon as possible, once the drive is unused, you can try to determine the extent of the damage.

For personal/ unimportant/ temporary data only:
Run "shred -v /dev/sdX", this overwrites the disk with (basically) random data three time, afterwards try to read the disk a couple of times (at least twice) like "cat /dev/sdX >/dev/null". If none of these commands resulted in error messages (read/ write errors, check the terminal you use for running the command and dmesg), the disk has remapped the broken sector and is good to go (again) for just about any purpose that doesn't require reliability and/ or data integrity. If you got any errors (other than disk full), the drive is broken - bang it on a hard surface and (ideally) drive a few nails through it, that way no one but a very determined and wealthy intelligence service would even bother to try recovering any data from it.
