After upgrading to nvidia-kernel-source 295.40-1 and nvidia-glx of the same version I'm getting only 30 frames in 5.1 seconds = 5.863 FPS
nvidia module loads normally, direct rendering test returns = yes, but something is obviously wrong. I have an older Nvidia 6x series but I have never experienced this problem before.

Same here.
I guess there's something wrong between Xorg and the Nvidia blob.

I'm afraid I haven't had time to investigate so I cleared out the nvidia blob etc and installed nouveau. Nouveau works fine with a frame rate of 1012 FPS (glxgears) on my onboard 7025 and is perfectly usable now I no longer need 3d acceleration. Small glitch over the whole of the bottom half of the screen at startup which disappears immediately but that's all.

I just followed the method used in the manual. It's quite easy.

The only problem I still have is that it works with a "regular" xorg.conf but won't work with the minimal xorg.conf. Not important to me.

Purging nvidia seems like a reasonable solution, still I'm curious what went wrong this time.

Yes so am I especially why X won't start if nouveau uses the minimal xorg.conf.

Mind you I've had niggling problems since the recent Nvidia.Xorg rumpus and they remined ever since. I don't think it hardware but I'll check when I have time. It's possibly a software problem as I've been DUing the system for quite a few years. Who knows what libraries are required by one package but now screw up another package. I would guess this is bound to happen over time especially as I'm a bit of a risk taker and sometimes use the experimental repos to get me out of an empasse. Maybe its time to reinstall.

I seem to remember your name from a few years back (kanotix or sidux?) so perhaps you're experiencing the same "overdue for a re-install" problem.

That said Nouveau seems just as jittery as the Nvidia blob. So perhaps it's a KDE problem. I really haven't got the time to do any heavy investigation. I did purge /var/tmp/kdeuser cache which seems to give a small increase in speed but no improvement otherwise. Before I do give up and reinstall I might purge the user parts of /home/$USE/.kde and see what happens.

If you do find out anything be sure to update this thread as I for one would be interested.

nvidia developers for the Linux platform never fail to deliver some high drama to spice up our otherwise boring lives Smile

I use Google Earth extensively and as soon as I updated to 290.40, it was not pretty! I simply dropped back to 240.20 and all is well. My glxgears is back to 1740 FPS on my older GeForce 6150SE nForce 430. Dare I suggest that you go to the NVIDIA site for your drivers. Download, run as root and you're back in business.

Downgrading is not a problem, but...
      Quote:
A security vulnerability in the NVIDIA UNIX driver has been closed with the latest driver release, 295.40. Because the vulnerability makes it possible for attackers with read/write access to the GPU device nodes to access arbitrary system memory, NVIDIA recommends that users of the NVIDIA Linux, Solaris, and FreeBSD drivers with Geforce 8 or newer, G80 Quadro or newer, or any Tesla GPU update their drivers to version 295.40 or later.

It's either the latest driver or patching the previous release, which involves removing existing kernel module and all other confusing stuff...I just dread to see the black screen with log-in prompt ...Sad
At times like this nouveau seems like a lesser evil

The vulnerability is why I went to nouveau. It was easier to get rid of the nvidia blob and use nouveau that play about with the patches. That and I realy don't have the need for 3d acceleration, at least not at the moment.

Nouveau is a bit prone to freezing on my machine but putting nouveau.noaccel=1 in /boot/grub/grub cfg seems to have solved the problem.
