While trying to resize,
I get
Quote:
Move partition to the right by 7.84 MB and shrink it from 450.66 GB to 194.67 GB
The Move partition to the right is irrespective of the partition resize chosen, I tried 2^n partition size.
If I do this, I will have to recover W7 with 12 reboots.
Please someone educate me how this can be avoided.
I am waiting... waiting...
Thanks
dpt
EDIT: Right now on Live CD. |

Did you use a graphical partition-tool? I think it was gparted (and not KDE-Partitionmanager) where you have a choice for some alignment-options ("cylinder-boundaries" or like that). Maybe you could try with gparted-Livecd if one or another of these options does not move your partition.
Are you sure you had to recover W7 after moving? If you used grub as bootmanager and os-prober, it should find and boot your W7 even if moved.
Another option is to make the windows-partition smaller from within W7 with its partition tool, then install Linux in the free space. |

I used the aptosid KDE-LITE, 64 bit CD. Last time the move was perhaps 7.84/2 MB.
Will look at this later some day.
Have resized, partitioned and done dual boot.
Thanks

Are you saying you've successfully done the dual boot before? I'm confused by your last line. The only ones I've ever done and got to work "right off the bat" I did the partition from the windows side, then did the install. |

I have done successful dual boot 3 or 4 times now,
on 3 laptops and one desktop (desktop with Winxp).
Always used the live CD, Gparted earlier, now aptosid.
As I go for grub in MBR (or/and the data is moved) I have to reinstall W7.
Typically I keep about 7-8 partitions, 2 for the OS, 1 for Linux swap
and others (mostly NTFS, maybe one FAT32, one EXT3) for data.
Acer service did not make a fuss for a machine when when SDA2 (that had W7 in it)
started giving errors (aptosid boot would show them, the live CD
indicating perhaps the LBA pointers). They replaced the hard disc
free during extended service warranty, and I have the old one with me
for some time to copy/erase data.
I am actually looking at the figure 7.84 MB by which the last partition (perhaps
its data) was moved. Last time on a disk it was about half of this.
maybe for rounded cylinders. I have not gone into all these ever.

Acer *used to have a hidden partition which is a restore utility used
to restore the machine to factory defaults.
ALT+F10 was used to access disk-to-disk (D2D) recovery partition. You may need to enable the D2D option in CMOS setup.
I remember years ago people had problems with this and partitioning. Not sure if this has anything to do with your problem or not, but thought it might be worth mentioning |

People had problems in resizing as some data(/files) would be far off almost at the end
of the 2nd or 3rd partition (1st restore(recovery, users advised to make DVDs also)/2nd bitlocker in some models, and
the last the OS + data and everything.
So the last space had to be consolidated before repartioning.
That needed softwarefor defragmentaion and consolidation of free space and lot of time, more than the time to use the restore partition/DVds.
I keep it simple now. Repartition as I like, reinstall with the DVds, install aptosid.
Few NTFS for data, a FAT32 now (as NTFS rw enable was not so simple as befefore) for sharing data (or moving)
between W7 and aptosid.
Thanks piper for the info.

hi
just a feddback of own experience
having trouble resizing from live linux on a 500 Go dd (brand new laptop, dell) wich was partitionned as follow :
100Mo fat 16 (dell utility)
15 Go ntfs (backups)ntfs
465 or something Go for OS (win 7)
trouble with partitionning because of "inconsistancy" of ntfs
leading to several reboots under w7...
so i did the reduction of size of last partition from w7 with the tool provided by os, it was very quick
in the saved space i created a root logical partition and a home logical partition, both ext4, from live cd
then install was a breeze...
first time i used this disk management tool from w7 and i
think if you wish to keep original partitions of the laptop
it is a good possibility... (time saving...)
new disk map as follow :
100Mo fat 16 (dell utility)
15 Go ntfs (backups)ntfs
95 for OS (win 7)
360 or something Go for tux, two logical partitions :
20 Go root
340 Go home
no swap : system memory is 4 Go...
i kept dual boot w7/debian "in case"
of course pure linux would be easier ...

Is writing Mo for MB and Go for GB a new/alternate convention?

actually octet is translated from byte and means "eight bits"
nevertheless speaking english here i should have used "Mb" and not "Mo", sorry
