One of the things that I miss in aptosid is a nice indication of the wireless network status in my Xfce panel (i.e., the kind of meter provided by nm and wicd). There is a standard Xfce wavelan panel plugin for doing this, but I don't like the way it looks -- if you want a signal meter, it uses two icons.
To that end, I wrote a script to implement (IMHO) a nicer wlan monitor using the Xfce4 genmon plugin. You can get the script from http://pastebin.com/3Yu7SBj0 . Be sure to read the requirements and set the settings as required. I configured genmon to call this every 4 seconds.
Extra credit: I also wrote a script to "toggle" xterm instances using wmctrl. I use this to start/stop wavemon by clicking the monitor's icon. You can grab toggle-xterm from http://pastebin.com/Rumk1UsQ .
Cheers,
